During childhood visits to Taiwan, I recall warm rolls of rice, stuffed with shredded pork, preserved vegetables and hard boiled eggs. They were conveniently rolled up within an outer layer of rice. These are called fan tuan. This was always paired with a cup of lightly sweetened soybean drink (dou jiang).
Back in California, fortunate as we were to have a variety of cuisines, that kind of breakfast was rare to find. Even though you could order fantuans from some local restaurants, you had to work around restaurant hours, which often were not breakfast hours.
I had read about this new spot called Rice Burrito (aptly named for Westerners) previously in the news (SFChronicle) and while I was in the area today for a doctors visit, I was near enough to stop by today to give it a try.
As I write this, I have just finished an Original White Rice Burrito and though it wasn’t as warm as one that’s freshly given to you from the breakfast stand, the texture, flavors and fillings all hit the marks of authenticity and yumminess.
Still sipping on my soybean drink, I also find it to be authentic to that ubiquitous drink that I grew up with, including that faint sweetness which makes it just right to enjoy for breakfast.
I like this place and can see myself stopping by to grab a late breakfast or even a lunch on the go. The wrapper makes a very convenient eating mat on your lap for catching crumbs.
This is definitely a takeout spot, as there are no tables for eating. There is only a counter, a bench to await your order and a digital self-checkout kiosk. They do not appear to have a cash register.
During my time writing this, quite a few people have come and gone from this little breakfast spot. Looks like business is good.
